Being a Carer for your ageing loved ones
When is the right time for home care?
Respecting our ageing loved ones
Research shows that 80% of older Australians prefer to age in the comfort of their own home rather than an aged care facility*. Our evidence-based approach at Home Care Assistance North Coast enables us to make this preference a reality – in fact, it is essentially why we exist.
Despite the need, the idea of having external Care Workers in the home may initially seem contrary to your loved one’s sense of independence. It is not uncommon for some people to show resistance to the idea of in-home care. At Home Care Assistance North Coast, we both understand and have experience in handling these feelings and can provide you with strategies to address the underlying concerns to help manage the transition to receiving care easier for everyone.
Home care funding options
We are fortunate in Australia to have many ways to fund home care. Government funding options such as Home Care Packages, the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and Carer Gateway respite can make home care more accessible and viable for many families, and Home Care Assistance North Coast can support you in your exploration of these options. Alternatively, you can also choose to entirely self-fund any necessary care.
Paying Privately
If home care is required urgently or for a short period, the simplest option to fund home care services is to pay privately. Some people prefer this option longer term as it requires no government processes or involvement in their care. At Home Care Assistance North Coast, we offer competitive hourly rates for all our services.
Home Care Packages
Home Care Packages are government funded and tailored to each individual. As a result, they can include things like help with anything from daily meal preparation or garden maintenance, to specific medical or health related services such as medication reminders. Home Care Packages are fully subsidised for those on an aged pension.
The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)
The CHSP can be a good option to access whilst waiting for a Home Care Package to be allocated, or it can be used on it’s own. Generally involving a small contribution when used, the Commonwealth Home Support Program helps those over the age of 65 years to maintain independence by providing access to entry-level support services.
Carer Gateway Respite
If you find that in your role as carer, you are suddenly unable to provide care or support, the Carer Gateway line is available. As a family caregiver, it can be helpful to know that help is only a phone call away.
How to apply for home care funding
The first step is to call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or apply for an assessment online.
Medicare card details and the details of the nominated primary contact person for your loved one will need to be provided as part of your online application. The primary contact will be required for a face-to-face meeting to better understand the support required. You can find out more about the types of assessments, what happens, and how best to prepare for it here.
What happens once funding is established?
Once your funding is established, be it private or government subsidised, our Home Care Assistance North Coast team will work alongside you and your loved one to create an individualised plan focused on a full life experience.
